Having an acute case of diarrhoea during pregnancy is not uncommon, like constipation it is almost expected since your physiology is in a state of chaos. It not even dangerous to the mother or the unborn. However, constipation is caused by internal changes in hormones while diarrhea during pregnancy is still caused by outside triggers. When pregnant though, the number of triggers increases.

Mostly dietary or hormonal changes become the new triggers for diarrhoea including sensitivities to certain foods while pregnant including sugar-free candies and dairy products. The most often seen are a newly acquired lactose intolerance. Diarrhoea treatment remain the same for pregnancy except there is a heightened awareness of the mother and the unborns level of hydration.

Pregnant women who already have existing gastrointestinal problems, such as inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome, can expect to suffer from more than the usual acute and chronic bouts of diarrhea during pregnancy. Fortunately diarrhea treatment during pregnancy is usually short lived and should not cause undo concern but still needs a watchful overseer. Pregnancy diarrhea should last only a day or two. If however you experience diarrhea accompanied by severe nausea or vomiting, it is important that you contact your doctor immediately. At that stage you may need medical assistance to help prevent dehydration. Dehydration also can put you at risk for premature labor. For this reason alone, you should take diarrhea in pregnancy as a serious matter.
