Food Reactions and Asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory lung disease characterized by recurrent breathing problems. Asthma results when triggers (or irritants) cause swelling of tissues in the airways of the lungs, making breathing difficult. Typical symptoms of asthma include wheezing, coughing and difficulty breathing.

Asthma can be triggered by multiple factors, including allergies from dust, mold, pollen, animals, and sometimes, food, air pollutants such as cigarette smoke or aerosol cleaners, cold and, in particular, respiratory infections, weather changes, exercise, or certain medications.

1. Diagnosed as food allergens
- peanuts
- nuts
- Sesame
- fish
- seafood
- dairy products
- eggs

2. Sulphiting agents such as sulfites and sulfur dioxide, potassium bisulfite, potassium metabisulfite, sodium sulfite, sodium metabisulfite and sodium bisulfite, which is found in dried fruits, shrimp, prepared tomatoes, wine, bottle or lemon juice lemon.

3. Food dyes and colorants such as tartrazine, and food such as preservatives BHA and BHT, monosodium glutamate, aspartame, and nitrite. although these have not been conclusively linked to asthma.
